Best adhesive & glue for plastic to plastic
Plastic is a very flexible and durable material, perfect for a variety of home projects. However, it can be difficult to find glues for these projects because many common glues don’t work well with plastics. That’s because many kinds of plastic have extremely smooth and glossy surfaces. Their lack of roughness and porosity makes it difficult for adhesives to find anything to bond to. Fortunately, however, there are some common adhesives on the market—some designed specifically for plastics, some not—that will get the job done.
What is the best adhesive for plastic?
Often the strongest glue for plastic may not be the best adhesive for plastic. There are a variety of factors to consider when choosing the best plastic glue. Obviously bond strength is at the top.
For most plastic bonding applications cyanoacrylate adhesives, UV curable adhesives, MMAs, as well as some epoxy and structural adhesives can be used. The large variety of adhesives available can make the selecting the best adhesive for plastic seem difficult.
To determine which adhesive for plastic will have the highest bond strength, it is often necessary to know the exact nature of the plastic. The type of plastic as well as the surface condition of that plastic.
Deepmaterial cyanoacrylate adhesive and most ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), PMMA (acrylic), Nylon, Phenolic, Polyamide, Polycarbonate, PVC (both rigid and flexible).
For cyanoacrylate adhesive to show good bond strength on polyethylene or polypropylene Deepmaterial POP primer should be used first.
All Deepmaterial plastic bonding UV curable adhesives bond well to most ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), Nylon, Phenolic, Polyamide, Polycarbonate, PVC (both rigid and flexible). Special plastic bonding UV curable adhesives are available for acrylic.
One part epoxy adhesives are generally not considered as the minimum cure temperature of the epoxy tends to be higher than the maximum temperature resistance of many plastics. Higher temperature resistant plastics such as PEEK and PBT can be bonded with special heat cure epoxy.
Two part epoxy adhesives can be used to bond certain plastics. Special grades of plastic bonding epoxy are available from Deepmaterial where high strength performance is required. Modified epoxy adhesives are two part epoxy adhesives that provide much higher flexibility than traditional two part epoxy adhesives.
Structural acrylics will also bond most plastics. Many types are available including surface activated, bead on bead, and two component. MMAs (methyl methacrylate adhesives) are an effective way of bonding plastic substrates and offer impressive adhesion strength – often substrates break before the adhesive bond is broken.
Adhesive Bonding Glass to Metal
One- and two-part Deepmaterial metal/glass binder compounds have excellent strength properties. Available in a range of viscosities and cure rates, these products adhere soda lime glass, borosilicate glass, fused silica glass, and aluminosilicate glass to metals such as aluminum, titanium, copper, steel, cast iron, and invar. Differences in thermal expansion coefficients need special consideration to ensure the correct adhesive is selected.
High Temperature Resistant Epoxy Offers Optical Clarity
Featuring high light transmission properties, Deepmaterial adhesive resists temperatures up to 400°F. It conforms to Title 21, FDA Chapter 1, Section 175.105 for indirect food applications. It exhibits impressive physical strength and excellent adhesion to both similar and dissimilar substrates. With a very low shrinkage after cure, it forms bonds that are rigid and resistant to chemicals. Deepmaterial adhesive has a four to one mix ratio by weight and is available in convenient syringe and gun applicators.
Rapid Curing High Strength Epoxy
Offering high temperature resistance up to 400°F, Deepmaterial adhesive is a one component adhesive/sealant that withstands thermal cycling and many harsh chemicals. After curing, Deepmaterial adhesive readily obtains a tensile shear strength in excess of 2,100 psi. It can be applied to vertical surfaces without sagging or dripping and is frequently used for glass to metal bonding.
Optically Clear Adhesive, Sealant and Coating
Deepmaterial adhesive delivers superior physical strength properties, low shrinkage upon curing and good non-yellowing stability. This system bonds well to a wide variety of similar and dissimilar substrates including glass and metals. Other notable features include outstanding durability, good electrical insulation properties, and thermal cycling capabilities.
